FAQ: LSA Fellowships


FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND LSA FELLOWSHIPS: GENERAL INFORMATION

Who is eligible to apply for LSA Fellowships?

Student members of the LSA, whether graduate or undergraduate, are eligible to apply.

Can students from outside the US apply for an LSA Fellowship?

Yes, anyone who is a student member of the LSA may apply for a fellowship.

What expenses do the LSA Fellowships cover?

The fellowships cover tuition to attend the Institute. They do not cover living expenses at the Institute or travel to and from the Institute from your home institution.

Are there other forms of financial assistance available besides LSA Fellowships?

Unfortunately, we do not have any other forms of financial assistance available. You should check with your department to see whether they might have some funding available for attending the Institute.

When do applicants hear back from the LSA about fellowships?

We expect the fellowship notification to be in time for awardees to go through the registration and sign-up process before the current April deadline of April 2nd. If fellowship notification is delayed, we will move the April deadline a few days later.


LSA FELLOWSHIPS: THE APPLICATION PROCESS

Where do I send materials and documents for the Fellowship application?

All materials and documents for Fellowship Applications should be sent to the LSA Secretariat: Archibald A. Hill Suite, 1325 18th St., NW, Suite 211, Washington, DC 20036, and not to Stanford University.

Where do I obtain an LSA Fellowship application?

The application is available from the LSA web site: here; it must be completed and submitted on-line.

When are LSA Fellowship applications due?

Completed applications must be received by the LSA by February 12; letters of recommendation must be received by the LSA by February 26.

Will I need to submit GRE scores to apply for an LSA Fellowship?

All applicants who are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in the U.S. must submit GRE scores. If your scores are less than 5 years old, an official GRE score report is required. If your scores are more than 5 years old, an unofficial (photocopied) GRE score report is acceptable. For applicants who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or Masters program in the U.S., or for applicants enrolled in a graduate program outside the U.S., GRE scores are not required, but if they are available, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit them (officially or unofficially).

Will I need to submit a transcript to apply for an LSA Fellowship?

For applicants who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or Masters program in the U.S., an official transcript is required. Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in the U.S. are strongly encouraged to submit a transcript (officially or unofficially) if available, but are not required to do so.

Will I need reference letters as part of my LSA Fellowship application?

Yes, you will need two reference letters; these letters must be received by the LSA by February 26. See the on-line application for further details.

Do non-native speakers of English who apply for fellowships have to submit TOEFL scores?

Non-native speakers of English who have not completed a degree at an English-speaking institution must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores with their application.
